BRIO Tuscan Grill BRIO Tuscan Grill Al Fresco at the Yorktown Center in Lombard Brio brings the pleasures of the Tuscan country villa to the American city. The Italians built their spacious country villas to escape the
pressures of urban life and enjoy "La Dolce Vita" (the good life). They would mingle with family and friends and eat freshly prepared food from their grounds while surrounded by natural beauty. In just this manner, Brio offers its guests "La Dolce Vita."
The food at Brio is all simply prepared using the finest and freshest ingredients. The menu emphasis is on prime steaks and chops, homemade pasta specialties, and flatbreads prepared in an authentic Italian wood-burning oven. Brio's villa-like interior features arched collanades, hand-crafted Italian mosaics, Venetian plaster walls and marble countertops.
Brio has among the highest average unit sales in the industry and was voted the 2007 "Hot Concepts" winner (Nation's Restaurant News). The average Brio seats 200 guests in 7,200 square feet of space. Brio has consistently received rave reviews by giving its guests this taste of Tuscan bliss.

Constitution Day September 17 Constitution Day, September 17th Celebration, Citzizenship Day Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is observed each year on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787 and “recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.”
This commemoration had its origin in 1940, when Congress passed a joint resolution authorizing and requesting the President to issue annually a proclamation setting aside the third Sunday in May for the public recognition of all who had attained the status of American citizenship. The designation for this day was “I Am An American Day.”
In 1952 Congress repealed this joint resolution and passed a new law moving the date to September 17 to commemorate “the formation and signing, on September 17, 1787, of the Constitution of the United States” but the day was designated “Citizenship Day” and also retained its original purpose of recognizing all those who had attained the status of American citizenship.
The law urged civil and educational authorities of States, counties, cities and towns to make plans for the proper observance of the day and “for the complete instruction of citizens in their responsibilities and opportunities as citizens of the United States and of the State and locality in which they reside.”
In 2004, Congress changed the designation of this day to “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day” and also added two additional provisions: first, that the head of each federal agency provide each new employee with educational and training materials concerning the Constitution and also provide such materials to every employee on September 17 of each year; and second, that each educational institution that receives Federal funds shall hold an educational program on the Constitution for students on September 17 of each year.

Executive Branch Documents
Presidential Proclamations and Executive Orders have been used by presidents to rule on substantive issues of law; to administrate the executive branch of government; and to make general announcements to the public. These general announcements which exhort the public to observe a holiday such as Thanksgiving or honor a particular group of citizens as in National Black History Month are usually issued in the form of a Presidential Proclamation. On many occasions Congress will pass a law specifically requesting the President to take certain action such as proclaiming the recognition of a particular group of citizens such as Jewish or Hispanic Americans.
1952 - President Truman proclaims the first Citizenship Day, Proclamation 2984, July 25, 1952, 17 FR 6931.
1955 - President Eisenhower proclaims the first Constitution Week, Proclamation 3109, August 19, 1955, 20 FR 6209.
2005 - Notice of Implementation of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day on September 17 of Each Year. 70 Fed. Reg. 29727.
Example Presidential Proclamations:

Berean Bible Students Church in Lombard We believe that God:
Has always existed, and is the only God.
Established the plan for the development of all creation, and its salvation.
Empowered all creation.
Chose Jesus Christ to be the creator of mankind, the ransom for mankind, and the restorer and personal savior of mankind.
We believe that Jesus Christ:
Is the first begotten Son of God.
Created all that was created.
Existed as a spirit (the Logos) when He created all things; became a human being to die as the ransom for mankind; was raised to divine glory to be the savior of mankind.
Always was fully and completely faithful and obedient to God, and guarantees all those whom He saves will be also.
We believe that the holy spirit:
Is the effective communication of the Father in the lives of His people.
Is the only means by which anyone can understand and obey spiritual things to the level of life saving faith and commitment.
Is the comforter, the leader into all truth.
We believe that there are two results of salvation.
1. A spiritual reward in heaven as the bride of Christ for all who:
Now accept Christ as Savior.
Consecrate their lives to Him.
Are faithful and obedient to God's will.
2. An earthly reward for all who:
Accept Christ as savior after their resurrection.
Are obedient and faithful during the Millennium.
Resist Satan's temptations after the Millennium.
We believe there is one result of rejecting God's salvation:
Eternal destruction - Cessation of existence.
We believe Christ is coming again to:
Establish His reign on earth.
Claim His bride.
Institute the Millennium by binding Satan.
Resurrect all of mankind.
Fulfill all spiritual promises.
We believe God's justice will prevail, as will His love and mercy.

History of the Newberry Library
"We must encourage every thing that tends to enlighten and polish the human mind.... We purpose to lay the foundation of a library which we hope to see go on increasing until it becomes the pride and boast of our city." - Walter L. Newberry, 1841
The Library was founded as a public library by a bequest of Walter Loomis Newberry, a businessman and prominent citizen, who had been an active book collector, founder of the Young Men's Library Association, and president of the Chicago Historical Society before his death in 1868. When he drew up his will, Mr. Newberry created a codicil should his daughters die without issue. Since Chicago had no public library at the time, he determined that in such an instance a public library should be established in the northern section of the city.

Trinity Lutheran Church and School During 2008, Trinity Lutheran Church is Celebrating its 140th Anniversary in Lombard. We
Welcome New Pastor Rev. Boomhower Installed on Sunday, March 10th, 2008.
Trinity: A Legacy of Lasting Faith:
Since 1860 the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been proclaimed from the corner of Roosevelt and Westmore-Meyers Roads in Lombard, Illinois. Originally founded as a Lutheran school by German farmers, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, along with the Christian school it operates, has served as a witness in the community, a refuge for the lost and a place where men, women and children have come to the saving knowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord. The world has changed during the almost century and a half of Trinity's existence and the streets that pass by Trinity have become much busier, but there is no less of a need for the Savior. It is the prayer of Trinity that God will keep this congregation faithful to His Word and teaching until the day of His return. The saints of Trinity join together to glorify God, receive His holy gifts of Word and Sacrament and await His promised coming. Come Lord Jesus.
We welcome YOU to Trinity!

LONDON 2012 From the 27th July to 12th August 2012, the host city for the Games of the XXX Olympiad will be the city of London. Following four rounds of voting by members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), today, at the 117th IOC Session, in Singapore, London eventually triumphed by taking 54 votes from a possible 104. This gave London the majority that it needed to be elected as the host city for the 2012 Games. London had to overcome stiff competition, however, in the form of Paris, New York, Moscow and Madrid in its bid to get the Games.

Sbarro Fresh Italian Cooking A Family Tradition
In 1956, the Sbarro family opened their first Salumeria (Italian grocery store) in Brooklyn, which was soon a neighborhood favorite for its exceptionally fresh food and authentic Italian fare, including homemade mozzarella, imported cheese, and delicious sausage and salami.
The quality of the food was surpassed only by the Sbarro family's extraordinary passion for their guests, a people-oriented foundation that continues to translate into the highest standards of customer service today.
The success of the Sbarro Salumeria led to the opening of more locations throughout the New York City area. In 1967, Sbarro opened its first mall-based restaurant in Brooklyn's Kings Plaza Shopping Center, marking the birth of the modern Sbarro concept: delicious, fresh and authentic Italian food in an open kitchen that allowed for fast self service. Over the last 50 years, the King's Plaza business model has been replicated some 1,000 times - helping Sbarro expand throughout the U.S, and the rest of the world.
In early 2007, Sbarro was acquired by MidOcean Partners, a premier private equity firm with offices in New York and London.

Historic Sheldon Peck Homestead Recognized as the oldest house in Lombard, IL, the Sheldon Peck homestead was constructed over a period of two years, during which the family lived in the covered wagon that brought them to Babcock's Grove, the early name for Lombard. The small white farmhouse, which has stood on the corner of Grace Street and Parkside Avenue since 1839, is a testament to one family's involvement with the pioneer community. It has witnessed many of the town's firsts: the earliest settlers, the coming of the Galena and Chicago Union train line (only a short distance from the front door), the first church and school, and the earliest businesses, to name only a few. But it is for the unique activities of Sheldon Peck - farmer, artist, educational supporter, and participant in the Underground Railroad - that this simple house has become noteworthy.
The Sheldon Peck homestead has been continuously owned by descendents of Sheldon Peck, and was given to the Lombard Historical Society by the Peck-Mertz family. The land was purchased by the Village of Lombard. Research and restoration of the house was completed under the direction of historic preservation architect Jack Luer. Mr. Luer donated his services to the community.
The Sheldon Peck Homestead will be open one day each week, and by special appointment. For further information, or to arrange a special school or community group tour, please contact the Lombard Historical Society at (630) 629-1885.

Merriam-Webster's Spell It! Welcome to Spell It!, the Scripps National Spelling Bee study site created in cooperation with Merriam-Webster. Spell It! focuses on about 700 words, divided into sections by language of origin. Studying language of origin will enable you to learn and remember several important rules, tips, and guidelines for successfully spelling words in English—the most challenging language of all for spellers!
Each section contains one or more "challenge words" in addition to its basic study list. Also included is our list of "Words You Need to Know." These words appear frequently in student essays, and every writer should become familiar with them. You should also study these words to prepare for classroom bees.
All of the words listed are linked to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary with audio pronunciations. If a list word has a dialog bubble next to it, click on the bubble to see a spelling tip for that word. And don't miss the general tips available under the Tips tab in most sections.
Although this site's main purpose is to provide you with the official list of study words for 2008, each of its sections also contains at least one exercise. The exercises are intended to give you further information about words that come from a particular language and help you better understand how the words behave in English. Some of the exercises are quite challenging. Don't feel discouraged if you can't answer all of them! Your teacher may have you work on them in groups or as a class. If you get stumped, you can click on the "Show Answer" link to view the correct answer to any exercise question.
We hope that you'll find this Web site as enjoyable as it is educational and that the fascinating facts you'll learn about the words discussed here will stay with you for many years to come!

Fraternity of Mary Immaculate Queen From Galway, Ireland,
Our Lady comes to us as Immaculate Queen of the Universe. In her, we contemplate the work of God, his full victory over sin and death. She is truly "our hope" (as we pray in the Salve Regina/Hail, Holy Queen), revealed as the created being who is "full of grace" (Lk 1, 28). As Mary proclaims in her Magnificat, "the Almighty works marvels for me", and so she can educate her children : not to turn us away from realities of this earth, but on the contrary to dwell here as beloved children of the Father. Mary is Immaculate : this means that in her, there is not the slightest resistance to God's working ; she welcomes his will with her whole being. Mary is the Queen : this means that she draws us, from this earth, toward a new world, the Kingdom prepared for us from the foundation of the world (cf. Mt 25, 34).
Highlighting Mary's queenship certainly doesn't mean forgetting her motherly love ! Clothed as Queen of God's all-powerful love, Mary, with all her maternal tenderness, exerts with Jesus a "benevolent" authority, in the Holy Spirit.
So we could say that the charism of our Messenger Family, following Clémence Ledoux is to render this mystery present in our ordinary daily lives.
Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe, triumph and reign ! «Here is the Queen of the Universe with the maternal Heart : She comes to meet her children, clothed in the infinite power of love.
Her cloak is bordered with ermine and envelops the earth with her royalty of love as a sign of her protection.
Her crown of gold and precious stones is the sign of the royalty of this Queen of love.
The royal sceptre held in her right hand, inclined as a sign of mercy, shows her power and her authority, which is one of love.
On her finger shines the ring of her alliance with her people.
At her feet, there is no longer the dragon, but the lily : She is the one who offers the purity of her heart to the earth, so that all men may see God and his victory.
Around her waist she wears the rosary : each 'Our Father' is represented by a rose of charity inviting the poor and the little ones to pray with one heart.
The stunning light which comes down from Heaven manifests the unique love which the Holy Trinity has lavished upon her.
A tremendous goodness emanates from this Queen with the motherly heart.
Her face, like her entire being, has the imprint of gentleness and majesty.
Her eyes, filled with mercy, are lowered towards the earth, looking for us, wanting to tell us of all the love with which the Heavenly Father loves his children.
She smiles at us with tenderness, and her hands reach out to us to protect us and to bestow on each one the graces of her divine Son.
She advances over the world and her feet barely touch the ground, reminding us that our time on earth is but a journey leading us to the Father.»

Calendars Through the Ages: Past, Present, Future, and Beyond... The Chinese Calendar
Chinese New Year is the main holiday of the year for more than one quarter of the world's population. Although the People's Republic of China uses the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes, a special Chinese calendar is used for determining festivals. Various Chinese communities around the world also use this calendar. At right, a large dragon lantern glows at a festival for Chinese New Year at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial. Taipei, Taiwan.
The beginnings of the Chinese calendar can be traced back to the 14th century B.C.E. Legend has it that the Emperor Huangdi invented the calendar in 2637 B.C.E.
The Chinese calendar is based on exact astronomical observations of the longitude of the sun and the phases of the moon. This means that principles of modern science have had an impact on the Chinese calendar.
The Chinese calendar - like the Hebrew - is a combined solar/lunar calendar in that it strives to have its years coincide with the tropical year and its months coincide with the synodic months. It is not surprising that a few similarities exist between the Chinese and the Hebrew calendar:
An ordinary year has 12 months, a leap year has 13 months.
An ordinary year has 353, 354, or 355 days, a leap year has 383, 384, or 385 days.
When determining what a Chinese year looks like, one must make a number of astronomical calculations:
First, determine the dates for the new moons. Here, a new moon is the completely "black" moon (that is, when the moon is in conjunction with the sun), not the first visible crescent used in the Islamic and Hebrew calendars. The date of a new moon is the first day of a new month.
Secondly, determine the dates when the sun's longitude is a multiple of 30 degrees. (The sun's longitude is 0 at Vernal Equinox, 90 at Summer Solstice, 180 at Autumnal Equinox, and 270 at Winter Solstice.) These dates are called the Principal Terms and are used to determine the number of each month:
Principal Term 1 occurs when the sun's longitude is 330 degrees.
Principal Term 2 occurs when the sun's longitude is 0 degrees.
Principal Term 3 occurs when the sun's longitude is 30 degrees.
etc.
Principal Term 11 occurs when the sun's longitude is 270 degrees.
Principal Term 12 occurs when the sun's longitude is 300 degrees.
Each month carries the number of the Principal Term that occurs in that month.
In rare cases, a month may contain two Principal Terms; in this case the months numbers may have to be shifted. Principal Term 11 (Winter Solstice) must always fall in the 11th month.
All the astronomical calculations are carried out for the meridian 120 degrees east of Greenwich. This roughly corresponds to the east coast of China.
Some variations in these rules are seen in various Chinese communities.

Crabtree & Evelyn, Ltd. Long before the ‘natural’ and ‘wellness’ movement became popular, Crabtree & Evelyn was wholeheartedly embracing the riches of the natural world. Our inspirational model is the early home apothecary, or “still room” as it was called in England. Still rooms existed in a time when the garden played an integral role in daily life - a time when fresh flowers, herbs and fruits were distilled to make fragrant waters for the bath and soothing essences for the skin. It is this unique relationship with nature that Crabtree & Evelyn diligently seeks to preserve.

NEIU Gerontology Program The M.A. in Gerontology is a multi-disciplinary program designed to provide both breadth and depth in the study of aging. By design, the program is part-time with courses offered in the evening or on Saturday. Most students find that taking one class per term and extending their program over four or five years allows them to best balance work, family and studies. It is, however, possible for a student to complete the program in three to four years by enrolling in two courses per semester after completing PSYC-AGED 401,and by completing their internship and thesis while continuing to take classes. Old St. Patrick's Church Since its founding by Irish immigrants on Easter morning in 1846, Old St. Patrick’s has been interwoven in the life and history of the City of Chicago. Founded in 1846 as the first English-speaking parish in the city, the current church building was designed in a Romanesque style by two of Chicago’s earliest practicing architects Augustus Bauer and Asher Carter. The cornerstone was laid on May 23, 1853, and the building was dedicated on Christmas Day, 1856.
Old St. Patrick’s is one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Its survival makes it the oldest public building in the City of Chicago.
Inspired by the Celtic art exhibit at the Columbian Expostition of 1893 and the Book of Kells in Ireland, Thomas A. O’Shaughnessy designed, constructed, and personally installed the 15 beautiful stained-glass windows of Old St. Patrick’s between 1912 and 1922. The 12 side windows were inspired by the Celtic designs of Ireland's Book of Kells. The final triptych windows, done in an art nouveau style and installed in the eastern facade of the church, are the “Faith, Hope & Charity” windows, also known as the Terrence MacSwiney Memorial Triptych. In 1977, Old St. Patrick's was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, Old St. Patrick’s is home to a membership of over 3,000 households and innumerable friends. As we grow, we continually redefine what it means to be an urban church. We are committed to remaining open to new visions and possibilities, seeking broader horizons as we journey into our future.

History of Du Page County in the Village of Lombard Lombard by Margot Fruehe.
The end of the Black Hawk War in 1832 signaled the beginning of the development of the area called Lombard. According to C. W. Richmond's 1876 DuPage County History, the earliest settler on the land of the town proper was Luther Morton, who built a cabin near the present rail depot, the heart of present day Lombard. But the town was originally named for brothers, Ralph and Morgan Babcock, who had settled farther west, near the DuPage River.

Go Forth..
-telling the Good News
-sharing the breaking of the Bread
-enriching the community through our talents, treasures, and time
-transforming the community by prayer and action.
Holy Name Cathedral has been serving Catholics and the city of Chicago for over 150 years. The Current Cathedral building opened in 1875, four years after the old church was destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire. Since that time, six Cardinals have presided over the parish and the Archdiocese, ministering to hundred of thousands of parishioners and visitors while overseeing an organization that provides invaluable services to the community’s poor, sick, and homeless.
Holy Name Cathedral’s rich history carries a burden though. The campus consists of several very old buildings, and the last major renovation of the Cathedral took place almost 40 years ago. Time has taken its toll on the physical structures. The time has come to do something about it.
Please help us preserve our Cathedral campus, ensuring that it continues to thrive as the center of Catholicism in Chicago. Join us in supporting the Restore & Renew Campaign.
The Plans
The Preservation Plan {$2.9 million}
In 2006, Holy Name Cathedral enlisted the services of a consulting firm to conduct an engineering study. The findings identified several critical items in need of repair or renovation:
Repair Limestone façade
Upgrade air conditioning system
Replace 50-year old boilers
Replace the Cathedral floor and refinish pews
The replacement of the Cathedral floor started in January 2007. The previous combination of stone and standard carpeting was replaced with a more durable terrazzo surface. Additionally the pews were refinished and reinstalled. The project was undertaken prior to Restore & Renew campaign to take advantage of an abnormally long break between the end of Advent and the beginning of Lent.
Replace roof membrane
Update fire protection in rectory
Repair hot water heaters and pipes

Chairman's Message
(from the Spring Issue of "Spain: The Business Link")
by Mario Díaz-Cruz, III
Chairman, The Spain-U.S. Chamber of Commerce
Design. There’s more to it than just looking good. It’s a reflection of our aesthetic values, our images of beauty, our philosophy in life, and our outlook on the world. How we dress, the homes we live in, and the art on our walls all reflect choices we’ve made, our understanding of who we are, and our place in the world. It is the outcome of our personal and shared history and helps identify us as individuals and within a broader culture.
When it comes to Spain, the country has long carved out a unique perspective in the worlds of creativity. In this issue of Spain: The Business Link, we look at design—and the business of design—through the lens of Spain. From Spanish fashion firms designing for consumers in New York, to a New York–based archi-tecture firm’s ongoing affair with Spain. From the influence of Spain and Spanish culture in films destined for international audiences, to an American so impressed with Spanish art that he amassed a collection that became known as the Prado on the Prairie.
This year, the Spain-U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been busy making things happen for the Spanish-American business community. In the section “News from the Chamber,” you can read about our networking events for members and their guests, our seminars with luminaries such as IESE’s business guru Erich Joachimsthaler and EU Commissioner Joaquín Almunia, and our trade missions and conferences that bring business information and con-tacts to entrepreneurs on both sides of the Atlantic. Our next gala is also in the works. This September, we bestow our Business Leader of the Year Award on Esther Koplowitz, honorary chairman and primary shareholder of FCC, Spain’s largest construction firm. Her leadership has guided FCC through a period of tremen-dous growth, both in Spain and abroad. In New York, FCC’s U.S. subsidiary CEMUSA has won important contracts for the provision of street furniture in urban markets such as New York, Boston, and Miami.
The Chamber also has added a presence in Washington, DC; Atlanta, Ga.; and Spain. Thanks to the participation of MAPA Ventures, Hemisphere Trade Services, and Global Strategies, the Chamber is now better able to reach out to the business communities in these areas. Establishing these relationships opens up new opportunities for existing members as well.
At the Spain-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, we are working for you to create value through networks, events, information, and communication. We’re here to help you, and we appreciate that opportunity.

Joffrey Ballet Company in Chicago, Illinois USA Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino's uniquely American vision of dance first took form in 1956. The original company consisted of six dynamic and highly individual dancers. While Robert Joffrey stayed in New York to teach ballet classes and earn money to pay the dancers' salaries, Gerald Arpino led the troupe across America's heartland, in a station wagon that pulled a U-Haul trailer. Their repertoire of original ballets by Robert Joffrey set them apart from other small touring companies, who often performed scaled-down versions of the classics. From the beginning, Joffrey and Arpino wanted a company that came out of their roots, out of America.

Founded in 1978, the Chinese American Service League (CASL) is the largest and most comprehensive social service agency in the Midwest dedicated to serving the needs of Chinese Americans. Housed in the Kam L. Liu Building, with over 250 multilingual and multicultural professional and support staff, CASL’s $7.8 million budget supports programming that mainly serves newly-arrived immigrants who often do not have formal education, possess few transferable job skills, and know little of the world around them. Since many of these individuals do not speak English and sometimes have no family or friends in the area, CASL becomes their instant family, friend, and teacher.
Each year the agency’s programs—in child education and development, employment services, counseling and social service, health, elderly services, and more—reach more than 18,000 clients annually who live primarily in the Chinatown, Armour Square, and Bridgeport areas of Chicago. Additional clients from across Chicago, neighboring suburban communities, and adjacent Midwestern states also use CASL’s services. CASL is a United Way partner agency and welcomes clients of all ages and backgrounds. CASL continues to work hard to ensure all members of Chicago’s diverse population can become independent, productive members of society.
History
Over twenty-five years ago a group of friends came together and discussed the needs of Chicago’s Chinese community. Some of them had already been working in the community as teachers, others had a background in social service, and some were business professionals. What they shared was a desire to help others and a drive to make a difference in their own community. The subsequent history of CASL’s growth is remarkable, and involved many steps along the way that clients, volunteers, members of CASL’s board, and staff all helped make possible. Throughout this was, of course, the community itself—as it grew, CASL grew along side of it. The strength of the agency is that it never lost its initial commitment to service, grounded in a holistic, one-on-one approach to individual casework.

Athenaeum Theatre & Performing Arts Center The Athenaeum opened in 1911 and was constructed by St. Alphonsus Church as a recreational center serving the mostly German community. The building featured a 1000 seat theatre for German Operetta, A gymnasium, bowling alleys, music and meeting rooms. Over the years, meeting rooms gave way to classrooms and the theatre became a temporary church in the early 1950's after a devastating fire damaged the church.
Today, under the direction of SCT Productions, the Athenaeum is once again fulfilling it's original purpose. Offices and studio Theatres now occupy former meeting room space and the 1000 seat theatre has been updated.
It is our mission to make affordable performance and office space available to to any size non-profit organization, with theatres ranging in size from 56 to 984 seats and office space ranging from a desk in a shared space up to full office suites.

Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, USA The Art Institute of Chicago, founded in 1879 as both a museum and school, first stood on the southwest corner of State and Monroe Streets. It opened on its present site at Michigan Avenue and Adams Street in 1893. Built on rubble from the 1871 Chicago fire, the museum housed a collection of plaster casts and had a visionary purpose: to acquire and exhibit art of all kinds and to conduct programs of education. The collection now encompasses more than 5,000 years of human expression from cultures around the world, and the school's graduate program is continually ranked as one of the best in the country. Within the next decade, a new complex will continue this process of growth.

Grand Lodge of Illinois, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Welcome to Illinois Freemasonry: "Faith, Hope, and Charity"
Illinois Masonic Charity Fund
Most Worshipful Grand Master Daniel C. Yandel welcomes you to the Grand Lodge of Illinois, A.F. and A.M.
A brief history of Masonry in Illinois
The bicentennial of organized Freemasonry in Illinois was celebrated in 2005 with the observance of the chartering of Western Star Lodge, established in 1805 in the town Kaskaskia in what was then known as the “Indian Territory.” Shadrach Bond, Illinois’ first governor, became a member of this lodge in 1806 and went on to serve as its presiding officer in 1815 and again in 1818, the year in which Illinois achieved statehood.
The first Grand Lodge of Masons of Illinois was formed by a small group of Lodges in 1822 and flourished for several years before ceasing operations in 1827, a period that coincided with the short-lived anti-Masonic national political movement. However, by 1839, Freemasonry was on the rebound and Illinois’ current Grand Lodge was formed in 1840.
Today, the Masonic Fraternity under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Illinois comprises more than 500 Lodges and 70,000 Masons—men of character from every walk of life all working together to build a better world!

Graue Mill and Museum and Frederick Graue House
Located in the southern corner of Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve, Graue Mill and Museum is one of the area’s remaining authenticated Underground Railroad “stations” and the only operating waterwheel grist mill in Illinois. Programs on milling, spinning, and weaving illustrate life between 1850 and 1890 and the effect mills had on the area’s culture. The restored Frederick Graue House, the 1850s Victorian home of the Graue family, is a perfect venue for small private functions.
Both facilities are owned by the Forest Preserve District and operated by the nonprofit DuPage Graue Mill Corporation. The mill is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from mid-April to mid-November, except on select holidays. House-rental information is available by request. For details, visit Graue Mill, or contact the museum at (630) 920-9720 or info@grauemill.org.
Ben Fuller House
The area that is now Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve emerged in 1833 as one of the first settlements along Salt Creek. Benjamin Fuller platted much of the land along the waterway and built his home, which now stands on the east side of York Road, sometime near 1840.
Volunteering
Volunteers at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center lead activities during Nature Discovery Programs and present the world of DuPage flora and fauna to children through games and puppet shows. They included filing for incorporation under the General Not for Profit Corporation Act of Illinois, and applying for 501e3 tax exempt status with the IRS.
ISLMA also became an affiliate of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) with voting status, began a membership campaign, and planned and executed a major conference. Committee chairs and committee members were appointed and a newsletter was begun.

Original Zen Buddhism Zen Buddhism The Original Zen Buddhism
Zen is a Japanese word.
Chan is the Chinese word that the Japanese called Zen.
Chan Buddhism was founded by Bodhidharma, while meditating in a cave above the Shaolin Temple in China.
Bodhidharma believed that exercise was required for any monk to reach enlightenment, or be a worthy monk.
Bodhidharma's Shaolin Disciples expanded the exercises by adding Muslim Kung Fu drills.
The warrior Buddhist Monks looked for the best Kung Fu and China and added Kung Fu weaponry dances from the "Hui" tribes of Northern China.
Now, the Shaolin Monks are famous for their Kung Fu. Most people don't realize that Kung Fu was created for spiritual development, not warfare.
shaolinZEN.org is the CyberTemple founded by Master Zhen Shen-Lang, who also founded the Tai Chi Youth Nonprofit Organization, and Shaolin Chi Mantis Traditional Buddhist Gongfu.
Master Zhen strives to improve each student by developing their body with Yang Style Taijiquan, balance their minds with Zen Buddhism, while developing their inner energies and spiritual powers with Qigong, Yoga, and advanced energy flow meditation exercises.
We're glad you've visited us and hope we'll be a regular pit stop on your path to enlightenment.

St. Augustine College St. Augustine College - Universidad de San Agustín "Pioneer in Bilingualism" "New Perspectives in Education"
St. Augustine College is an independent, bilingual (dual language) institution of higher education created under the auspices of the Episcopal Diocese to make the American system of higher education accessible to a diverse student population, with emphasis on those of Hispanic descent; to strengthen ethnic identity; to reinforce cultural interaction; and to build a bridge to fill cultural, educational, and socio-economic gaps.
The first permanent European settlement in this country was named St. Augustine and was founded by Pedro Menendez de Aviles on September 8, 1565, fifty years before the landing of the Pilgrims in New England. Just as these Spanish settlers were pioneers in their time, so are the founders of St. Augustine College in Chicago: pioneers in bilingual (dual language) higher education. The College is also named after Bishop Augustine of Hippo, an educator and philosopher whose teachings helped to shape modern thought.

Stark Brothers Nursery Stark Brothers Nursery A growing legacy since 1816...In 1816, James Hart Stark and a small band of pioneers moved west from Kentucky and settled on the west bank of the Mississippi in a place that would later become Louisiana, Missouri.
James Hart Stark brought with him a bundle of apple scions. From this bundle grew a thriving nursery business which became the world famous Stark Bro’s Nurseries and Orchards Co.
By carefully selecting and propagating only the best varieties, James Stark started a tradition. Dedicated to earning a reputation for quality, Stark Bro’s gained world leadership as a developer and promoter of outstanding fruit varieties. The most famous of these was the Stark Red Delicious Apple in 1893. In 1914, the Stark Golden Delicious Apple was discovered and developed.
This work led to an association with famed plant wizard Luther Burbank. He selected Stark Bro’s to carry on his work and willed over 750 varieties to the company.
Paul Stark, Sr. was instrumental in writing U.S. legislation creating plant patents in the ’30s. Today, new fruit varieties may be patented just like other products. Stark Bro’s holds patents or exclusive propagation rights to many patented varieties of fruit.
Today:
Stark Bro’s continues to operate in the tradition of the past 190 years. Our president’s father was instrumental in setting up the Stark Garden Center in Louisiana. Stark trees have been grown on their family farm for many years and continue to be grown there today.
In the Stark tradition, new and innovative products continue to be introduced through the Stark Bro’s catalog and web site, including the new Stark Kwik Krop™ Fruit Tree, the quickest bearing trees ever offered. Most of Stark Bro’s Custom Grafts and some fruit and nut trees are grown in “bottomless” pots to naturally air prune the roots, creating a dense mass that transplants and establishes quicker, eliminating loss due to transplanting, accelerating rate of growth and inducing early flowering and fruiting.
Stark Mother Lode™ Berries are cloned from the tissue of only the finest, most productive mother plants. All are uniform in size, shape, quality and growth patterns, certified disease and virus free and potted to keep the root system intact.
Tomorrow:
Stark Bro’s intends to be at the forefront of the industry in innovation and productivity. You can look forward to many years of new Stark products to meet your fruit tree, small fruit, nut and landscaping needs in the future. As we move into this new century, look for us. We will be there.
